Give a look at the Canon 7D, pretty good DSLR.

Yup I'd go with the 7D or the Nikon D7000 depending on your budget, both are amazing photo cameras and shoot excellent video as well. I'd say the 7D is a little better currently because it can shoot 60 fps which is really nice for sports. There's also the Canon T3i (EOS 600D or something?) which is great if you're on a lower budget.

The Nikon D400 is probably going to come out soonish if you want to wait for Nikon's 7D counterpart. It's newer tech so it will probably blow away anything that's currently out there.

What lense are you guys using? Tele for beach shots and a wide angle for shots in the water?

It depends on your location really, at our beach it's hard to shoot with anything shorter than 150-200 or so unless they're throwing tricks right on the shore.

If you have a waterproof housing or are in a perfectly flat shallow spot where you can go stand out nearby, something in the range of 10-16mm would be pretty sick. The 7D is weatherproofed which means you can splash it, just not dunk it, but you need L-lenses as well if you're going to get them wet at all.

I've only shot inline with my wideangle but here's an idea of what 11mm looks like. I was lying on the ground maybe 3-4 feet away.

A friend of mine who is a great photographer recently said this is the best camera for a budget. Works great with video because of the rotating viewing screen. Haven't personally used it but Its the camera Im looking at getting even though its only 5.3fps instead of 8fps on the 7d. Loads cheaper too.

i have a 60d, good bang for your buck, although the 7d and 5d are coming down in price lately.

better to spend your cash on glass imo

The Canon T2i is half the price of the 7D and has the same exact video quality. Photography is barely better on the 7d, certainly not enough to warrant paying $1,300 vs $650. You'd be better buying the T2i and use the money you save on a nice lens. If you're on a bigger budget get the 5d for 2,000. It shits on everything else in the DSLR market.

If I didn't allready have a 7D, and were to buy a camera now, I would really consider Sony slt A55. It can take 10 pics/sek. Has a pivotable lcd, and it can autofocus during filming. The 7D takes 7 pics/sek, the lcd can't be moved, and the autofocus during filming is crap. And, the sony is cheaper. What you don't get with the sony is an optical viewfinder (it's got a viewfinder, but it is digital), and the video is 1080i instead of 1080p, whatever that means..

You also get a shit Sensor and shit lenses with the Sony. I would personally never go anything other than Canon or Nikon.

lol, well nikon/canon license sensors from sony so theres no worries there, and zeiss lenses are amazing. but i agree, i'd pick one of the big 2 as well, if only for retail value and ease of acquiring compatible gear
