Although the disciplines are yet to be determined this is a step in the right direction. It will probably just be racing at first, but who knows, there's some time from here to 2016 for them to decide.

pretty sure its not a step in the right direction. who the fuck wants to see a bunch of people riding round doing nothing on boards that should be picnic tables?! let alone the first thing a lot of people are going see about kiting is going to be less interesting than lawn bowls

promoting racing in kiteboarding is like promoting parallel slaloms in snowboarding.
almost nobody does it.
racing will get a push with this for a few years and then it'll be as alienated from the sport as olimypic windsurfing was the last years.

has olymia helped grow windsurfing? no!
has it filled some pockets of a few? yes!

there is a lot of money involved in the preparation of athlrtes for the olymics, a fraction of this money guided to competitions that people really want to see would help the sport much more.

It's sailing. Kiteboarding is the fastest form of sailing and more interesting to watch than multi million $ yachts going in circles

Btw, kite racing sucks!!! and should only be present in the special olympics.

But if that makes the way for freestyle entering OL, then it's cool with me. Hopefully it will get people a bit interested and when they google it, they will soon find out that freestyle rocks-racing sucks! And wakestyle is godness And that will lead to freestyle kiteboarding getting on the program in 2020

I may agree that kite racing is stupid, but didn't they have ski and snowboard racing before freestyle in the Olympics?

Like it or not, it is a starting point, and it would be highly unlikely that they would bypass racing before getting into freestyle kiteboarding.

Also, they haven't confirmed that is going to be just racing, so they could still add freestyle.

For the people that are against, I understand your concerns. But can you also see the good that can come from this? Yes its representing the "racing" aspect of the sport which is the opposite of what the Kitescoop stands for but the positives can outweigh the negatives if the cards are played right.

- Government support - Anytime there's government intervention into a sport there are positives and negatives but this is a good way to get access to areas that were no goes. Riders at commitees to have a foot to stand on when battling against your town council.

- Outside sponsorship - yes Redbull is great but there are plenty of other corporate sponsors that riders and events would love to get their hands on. "Sell out" or whatever you want, just imagine that the events you compete in have real prize money and corporate sponsors give you a living salary (I know half this scoop is a sponsored rider in one way or another and i have met most of you...don't tell me this doesn't interest you!)

-Trickle down effect - Yes there will be a wider support for the Olympic kite racing event but there will be plenty of events in wakestyle/freestyle/wave that companies would like to get a piece of the action.
